The other side of the crisis, a social pandemic no government seem to notice
While Argentina hits one million COVID-19 cases, and the provinces struggle to face the pick of cases, women are still suffering from domestic violence, an epidemic that never seems to go away and no government can eradicate. There has been 213 femicides since the beginning of the year, as women have been forced live with their abuser (statistics show that 63% of femicide victims are killed usually bi their a partner or ex-partner). The restrictions of quarantine had exacerbated the situation: The National Women, Gender and Diversity Ministry has reported a 25-percent increase in calls to the 144 Gender Violence Helpline. Some of the reacent victims these past months:
· August 29: Cesia Nicole Reinaga, 20, disappeared; her body was found 10 days later dumped in a disused slaughterhouse
· September 23: Iara Rueda, 16, from Palpala, wnt cycling in the early evening; her body was found five days later six blocks away from her home.
· September 24: Gabriela Cruz, 24, disappeared from her home in Palpala; her body was found seven days later 15 kilometres away.
· September 29: Roxana Mazala, 32, from Perico, was found dead the following day of joining friends on a march demanding justice for Iara Rueda.
· Friday, October 9: Alejandra Alvarez, 17, left her home in Alto Comedoro, Jujuy; her body was found nearby the following day.
Nevertheless, Justice has not yet develop right polices for women to feel safe and protected by the government, How many more femicides have to go unnoticed until politics take action in this matter?
