LAURA ZALAZAR, AN ARGENTINIAN TEACHING IN THE UNITED STATES

On Tuesday, October 13, we interviewed Mrs Zalazar about her personal life and her academic path. Laura is an Argentine English teacher who worked here in Buenos Aires in some primary and secondary schools. She applied for the Fulbright Scholarship and got elected for an educational exchange program in the United States for one year. She gave us some insight on the TOEFL exam, which is a necessary requirement for foreign students that apply for scholarships in the U.S.A. She also told us about the many trips she has done around the globe.

She mentioned that it is difficult to adapt to the American culture since people are different and you don't get to connect with them. Unless they are latinos or Argentines they are not going to stay the whole day in your house. She also told us that there is a kind of group called “La comunidad” and they are the people that she is closer to because it’s hard to connect with American people.

Regarding what she likes about the United States and its culture she told us that she really likes the stability of the country and the study and working atmosphere.

We also asked her which one of all the countries she has visited is the one that caught her attention the most and she answered us that country is Japan because it’s very different, in all aspects , from any other country she has visited so far.

Finally, we asked about the reaction of her parents when she told them about leaving Argentina and she answered that they expected so there wasn't a reaction. She would have travelled to Argentina in March 2020 if it hadn't been for the Covid-19 so she has to wait until May 2021 to see her parents again. Nowadays, there is a serious problem of racism in the US so we asked her how she has been treated  by people there but she said that she hasn't had any problems for being from Argentina.

As a conclusion we can say that we managed to understand life and cultural differences between Argentina and the USA. Listening to her experiences, we can reflect on the the idea of  having a future far from our country but at the same time being aware of the sacrifice that it represents and all that we should give up.
