THE IMPRESSIVE EXPLOSION OF A METEOR OVER TOKYO
A meteor exploded in the sky of the Japanese Kanto region last Thursday. Numerous witnesses said they heard the sound of its explosion as it entered the atmosphere. Based on the data
obtained, the International Meteor
Organization calculated that the energy
released in the explosion was the
equivalent of 150 tons of dynamite. Also,
they deduced that the size and mass of
the object would be 1.5 metres
diameter and 5.5 tons respectively. In
addition, the object was captured by an
infrasound monitoring station of the
International Surveillance System, which
is located about 1,150 kilometres away
and is used to detect nuclear explosions.
The meteor was also captured by the
Akeno Observatory of the Technological
Institute of the Japanese capital.
