July 9 for children
Many years ago, in 1816, in a very small province in Argentina, something very, very important happened.
The representatives of each province would meet there to sign an Act declaring Independence, they wanted to be free from the King of Spain. The first steps had already been taken on May 25, 1810.
The representatives of each province, had to travel a lot to get to Tucumán, at that time there were no planes or cars like there are now.
The deputies travelled on stagecoaches, carts, and on horseback. The trip was very tiring, they were cold, and they had to eat by the side of the road or get to some inns, to rest for a while and eat there as well. It was a huge sacrifice, but they were happy to be able to do something so important for their country and for the Argentine people. They were tired of depending on a king from another country.
At that time there were no hotels, so the neighbours offered to receive the deputies at their homes, and they gladly accepted.
